Essential oils are substances of vegetable origin, perfumed, volatile, soluble in fats, oils and organic solvents. Insoluble in water. Because of their liposolubility they have been classified as oils, and for their fragrance as essences.
Essential oils carry out various types of biological activity. For external use, the two main properties are antiseptic and stimulant. Essential oils are found in all parts of the plant: in the seed, in the root, in the wood, in the leaves, in the flowers and in the fruits.
They are produced with particular procedures that vary according to the type of essential oil, but all are based on the volatility and liposolubility of the essences. There are two groups of essential oils: the hot ones (thyme, pine) and the cold ones (mint, eucalyptus), so defined for the sensation they induce. The oldest procedure, now little used, is the enfleurage, which consists in laying down the vegetable (usually flowers) on a layer of fat, which is impregnated with odorous substances.
The flowers are replaced as they run out, until they get a floral pomade full of essential oils, which are extracted with a solvent. The most used process, however, is the steam current. This technique consists in bringing the vegetable into contact with water vapor, which draws the essential oils with it. After cooling, the condensed steam in the form of water, above which floats a layer of essential oil. It is a modern technique that has the advantage of not using organic solvents, traces of which could remain in the oil, affecting its complete naturalness.
