Food supplement
Lactase is an enzyme naturally produced, at least in the initial stages of extrauterine life, by mammals; with growth, in fact, there can be a progressive decrease in the quantity produced. This enzyme is responsible for the digestion of lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products.
Lactase breaks down lactose into two simpler sugars, glucose and galactose, which can be absorbed by the small intestine and used by the body as an energy source. Without lactase, lactose cannot be digested and passes to the colon, where it is fermented by intestinal bacteria. This fermentation can cause a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloating, flatulence, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
The amount of lactase produced varies greatly among human populations. In some populations, such as those in Europe and North America, most people retain the ability to digest lactose into adulthood, while in other populations, such as those in Asia and Africa, most people lose the ability to digest lactose after childhood.
Lack of, or reduced, production of lactase is known as lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance can be caused by a congenital lactase deficiency or by a reduction in lactase activity in adulthood.
Diagnosis of lactose intolerance can be made by hydrogen breath testing or by genetic testing to determine the presence of genetic variants associated with lactose intolerance. Treatment of lactose intolerance generally involves eliminating or reducing the consumption of lactose in the diet or taking lactase supplements.
Furthermore, techniques have been developed in recent years to genetically modify intestinal bacteria to produce lactase, with the aim of providing a long-term solution for lactose intolerance. However, these techniques are still under study and are not yet available for clinical use.
