+WATT OMEGA 3 - KRILL OIL
Dietary supplement
Omega 3 - KRILL Oil is a food supplement based on polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 series (EPA, DHA), phospholipids and antioxidant astaxanthin. The oil is extracted from krill, a group of small crustaceans of the order Euphausiacea present in all the oceans.
Extracted from the most abundant species (Euphausia superba) present in the cold polar waters of the Southern Ocean. This oil is rich in omega-3 and astaxanthin, an antioxidant substance.
Essential fatty acids are essential substances for the body which, however, we are not able to synthesize independently. Consequently, only with diet can we meet the correct needs of these substances, like vitamins, mineral salts and essential amino acids.
In the omega-3 class there are two particularly important types of fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
These fatty acids perform a plastic function (cell membranes) and are particularly abundant in the central and peripheral nervous system, where they tend to decrease with aging. Numerous studies have associated the decrease in essential fatty acids with the appearance of nervous system dysfunctions (e.g. loss of memory, visual acuity, etc.). Furthermore, from a metabolic point of view, essential fatty acids are precursors of prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, all metabolites active in functions such as muscle contraction, platelet aggregation and the inflammatory response. A deficiency of essential fatty acids can, therefore, create important imbalances in the body's functions. A correct intake of essential fatty acids from the omega-3 series has the beneficial property of lowering the concentration of triglycerides in the blood. They also have the ability to reduce platelet aggregability, thus reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
Omega-3 supplementation also brings benefits to the health and appearance of the skin, helping to protect damage from UV rays (Pilkington et al. 2011; Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Photoprotective Macronutrients); preliminary studies also suggest a reduction in inflammatory conditions of the skin such as acne (Rubin, Kim, and Logan 2008 Acne vulgaris, mental health and omega-3 fatty acids: a report of cases).
Krill oil naturally contains astaxanthin, an important antioxidant, 11 times more powerful than beta-carotene and 550 times more powerful than vitamin E, capable of acting as an efficient 'cellular scavenger' of free radicals at the level of cell membranes (Fassett and Coombes, 2012; Astaxanthin in Cardiovascular Health and Disease). These properties make it a molecule with various beneficial effects for the organism, including anti-inflammatory roles and protection from cardiovascular diseases (von Schacky, 2007; Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease). Additionally, a 2012 study found that daily oral astaxanthin supplementation improved skin texture and elasticity and reduced the size of age spots (Tominaga et al. 2012; Cosmetic Benefits of Astaxanthin on Humans Subjects).
Krill oil contains 2 other molecules important for our body that work in synergy with omega-3: choline and phosphatidylcholine. As reported in several scientific studies, choline and phosphatidylcholine play a fundamental role in heart health, preventing heart disease and reducing the likelihood of type 2 diabetes (Xu et al. 2022; SGLT2 Inhibition, Choline Metabolites, and Cardiometabolic Diseases […] randomized study). The synergistic effect appears to be due to the ability of these molecules to bind lipids, thinning the blood and reducing the LDL cholesterol content. In particular, choline also contributes to the normal functioning of our nervous system, preventing its deterioration caused by age or other neurological diseases.
