The eight B-complex vitamins work in different ways to help enzymes carry out the thousands of molecular transformations in the body and are therefore known as coenzymes. All B vitamins are water-soluble substances that can be obtained from bacteria, yeasts, fungi or molds. Known B-complex vitamins are B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (vitamin PP or nicotinamide), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine), B12 (cobalamin), biotin, and folic acid , (folate, folacin, pteroylglutamic acid). Their grouping under the term B complex is based on their common origin, their close connection in animal and plant tissues and their functional relationships.
There are three substances, called non-B vitamins, which are often mistakenly regarded as vitamins. They are inositol, choline, (which gives part of its structure to lecithin) and lipoic acid. These nutrients are not part of the essential B-complex vitamins, but are coenzymes that aid metabolism and are found in a wide variety of foods. Other substances mistakenly considered B vitamins are para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), bioflavonoids (vitamin P) and ubiquinone. Vitamin B15 (sometimes called pangamic acid), B17 is laetrile, BT, carnitine, is an important component of cells but not a vitamin.

The B complex vitamins provide energy to the body by converting carbohydrates into glucose, which the body "burns" for energy. They are essential in the metabolism of fats and proteins. In addition, B vitamins are necessary for the normal functioning of the nervous system and can be considered the main factor for nerve health. They are essential for maintaining muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and for healthy skin, hair, eyes, mouth and liver.
