Native to Tibet, Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) is a medicinal mushroom native to the Himalayas, which grows at altitudes of over 3,000 metres. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for around two thousand years and was once only intended for use by the imperial nobility.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has always been considered a powerful tonic for the kidney QI, which is considered to be the seat of vital energy. A powerful tonic that calms the soul and brings vigour to the body, it is also believed to stimulate sexual function, regulate fertility and hormonal problems, and is even considered a natural male and female aphrodisiac.
And that's not all, the precious medicinal mushroom in Eastern countries is still highly valued and used for various illnesses (including oncology) and to support the immune system, for respiratory disorders, kidney disorders, liver disorders, to support cardiovascular health, and against asthenia. Its numerous qualities and health benefits are due to its many highly bioactive compounds, in particular polysaccharides, mostly beta-glucans with galactomannan in first place, nucleoside derivatives (such as the valuable cordicepine or cordicepic acid), phytosterols, mineral salts and many others.
In the modern day, it began to attract the interest of the western world in the 1990s, after Chinese athletes competing in the Nuremberg World Athletics Championships set a remarkable series of records that fuelled suspicions that they were probably using doping substances, but this was all disproved by anti-doping tests. This medicinal mushroom is authorised by all the world's sports federations, starting with the IOC (International Olympic Committee), because it is safe and beneficial to the health of sportsmen and women. And it is precisely for sportsmen and women that it is an increasingly popular nutraceutical supplement, as various studies have shown that Cordyceps sinensis is able to improve oxygen utilisation and ATP production by optimising intracellular energy production processes, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, and mitochondrial activation, thus helping to improve resistance to fatigue as well as promoting better tissue oxygenation.
The daily stress and modern frenzy of the western world has placed it among the best-known tonic-adaptogens for those who have to endure periods of severe psychophysical fatigue or convalescence, providing an interesting immunomodulatory and hypoglycaemic effect and as a promoter of normal liver, respiratory and cardiac function.
