NATURAL POINT B2 100 Dietary supplement Vitamin B 2 100 is a vitamin with a deep yellow colour, which is used as a food colourant. It is an important vitamin as it allows the chemical energy contained in macronutrients (carbohydrates, sugars and fats) to be converted into useful energy for the body. What is B2 100? B2 100 is a water soluble vitamin B2, or riboflavin, supplement and is part of the vitamin B-complex. Use and mechanism of action Vitamin B2 or riboflavin is a water soluble vitamin that is part of the vitamin B complex. Vitamin B2 deficiency manifests slowly and begins with tiredness, itchy eyes, photophobia and mood swings and can subsequently increase in severity, with dermatitis, anaemia and brain changes. Symptoms of deficiency may manifest in the elderly people and, above all, following particular physiological conditions linked to the use of certain medicines or alcohol. Vitamin B2 biologically acts as the main component of two coenzymes, FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide) and FMN (flavin mononucleotide); these coenzymes are involved in various reactions relating to the metabolism of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats). The main functions of vitamin B2 are promoting the use of energy by the macronutrients present in the diet and maintaining the integrity of the nervous system, skin and eyes; riboflavin also promotes normal growth and development. One of the more interesting aspects of riboflavin is the joint action it exerts on free radicals, together with an enzyme known as glutathione reductase, thus protecting cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin B2 also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin. As such it is not stored in the body and must therefore be taken daily through the diet or with supplements. Vitamin B2 is easily absorbed by the walls of the small intestine. It is then carried by the blood to the body’s tissues and excreted in the urine and in sweat. The amount excreted depends on the amount taken and by tissue requirements. Vitamin B2 absorption is inhibited by alcohol, while other substances may reduce the bioavailability thereof (caffeine, saccharin, theophylline and tryptophan).
