The health effects (also called physiological or health actions) of medicinal plants depend on the active ingredients contained within them. These active ingredients are found in specific parts of the plant, such as roots, leaves, inflorescences and bark. The plants, in addition to the active ingredients, contain additional nutritional factors, for example, vitamins, minerals, amino acids or fatty acids. The combination of all these substances (active ingredients and nutritional factors) forms what is called by experts the "phytocomplex" of the officinal plant. The plant complex provides plant extracts with unique characteristics that can not be reproduced in the laboratory and guarantees greater stability over time of the active ingredients themselves.

It is a perennial herbaceous plant with a fusiform, branchy and coarse root. The stem is erect, 1-1,5 meters high. The lower leaves have a crushed petiole and widened at the bottom in a fleshy sheath that is large and white in the cultivated varieties. The flowers are all fertile, yellow, collected in solitary umbrellas.
