Nerve cells (neurons) are the basic units of the brain. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is the main phospholipid present in the brain, and is present mainly in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane of neurons. Like other phospholipids, phosphatidylserine can be produced by our body but production can become less efficient as we age when neurological deficits with memory declines start to appear. Oral supplementation with phosphatidylserine is able to modify the composition of neuronal membranes.
